St. Brigid of Ireland, Patron Saint of Poets

That such poetry… has been made a vehicle for an unsentimental, thoroughly religious sensibility that does not turn away from the spiritual combat inevitable to life in this world suggests that contemporary poetry is regaining its capacity for a seriousness that extends beyond the everyday secular preoccupations of our time…. No matter the age, our souls will remain restless until they penetrate the depths of things to their source in the creative giving forth of the divine.
— James Matthew Wilson, The Catholic World Report, July 14, 2018

The Catholic Poetry Society of Houston is a place to write, to develop additional skills or to simply relish the beauty of poems written by people who share our Catholic tradition and beliefs. We welcome writers of good will from other faith traditions who wish to join our community.

You don’t need to be a poet, just be thirsty for excellent writing, informed discussion, and companions for poetry's enjoyment.

If you are a poet, or would like to give writing a try, we offer you a supportive environment to explore and develop skills. You will work directly with experienced poets who are interested in coaching writers and knowledgeable about contemporary issues on the national level for Catholic Arts.

We meet monthly, and plan to host additional, larger gatherings to promote visiting Catholic poets and Houston poets, and to celebrate our members.

When you join Catholic Literary Arts, you are automatically a member of Catholic Poetry Society of Houston.
